Kadokawa Corporation Acquires ACQUIRE, Developer of the Octopath Traveler Series


Kadokawa Corporation has announced the acquisition of ACQUIRE, the developer of the Octopath Traveler series, from GungHo Online Entertainment. The company revealed this news in its financial results for the three months ended December 31, 2023. “To strengthen the ability to create intellectual property in games as part of our gaming business strategy, we have made ACQUIRE Corp. a wholly owned subsidiary,” the company stated.

Founded in 1994, ACQUIRE is dedicated to the development and marketing of original game titles for consoles, as well as contract development. In addition to the Octopath Traveler series for Square Enix, the company also developed the Tenchu ​​and Way of the Samurai series, owned by Kadokawa Group subsidiaries FromSoftware and Spike Chunsoft, respectively. His best-known self-published series is Akiba’s Trip.

With this acquisition, Kadokawa Corporation hopes to generate synergies with its gaming-related subsidiaries, strengthen its planning and development capabilities across the group, and enhance its line of console games.
