Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy crossover set launches today, fully restocked at major retailers

Even if you’re not invested in Wizards of the Coast’s long-running card game Magic: The Gathering, there’s a good chance that you, the discerning Eurogamer reader, have heard that there’s a Final Fantasy crossover set which launches today.

If you’ve been caught up in the hype, however, you’ll know that many of the products on offer have been sold out since preorders opened up in February.

Now, however, Amazon appears to have released more on launch day, meaning some Commander decks, boosters, and more are available, while one surprising retailer still has a Collector’s Edition version of at least one Commander deck.

The latest expansion for the card game covers all sixteen mainline entries in Square Enix‘s legendary series, with cards showcasing heroes, villains, spells, summons and, naturally, Chocobos.

If you are new to the game of Magic, then the new Starter Kit is a great place to get started. It includes two, ready-to-play decks, with one helmed by Sephiroth and another by Cloud.

It’s a fantastic way to learn the rules, and you and a friend can get up to speed swiftly.

So, what about that Collector’s Edition? Well, despite being sold out pretty much everywhere (despite a high asking price), HMV is offering the Revival Trance Collector’s Edition Commander deck right now.

We’d imagine it’ll be gone pretty quickly, but it’s likely to be in demand for Final Fantasy 6 fans. If you’re new to Magic, Collector’s Edition versions of decks have the exact same cards as the standard versions, but each of their 100 cards is included in Foil versions.

Booster Boxes are available, too, although stock appears to have almost gone already for those at Amazon, so it’s worth checking HMV as well. You can currently grab the Final Fantasy Bundle, however, which includes 9 Play Boosters for £60.99.

That should help kickstart your collection, or find some cards to upgrade your Commander deck.

Next up are the rest of the Commander decks. For the uninitiated, Commander is Magic: The Gathering’s most popular format, and can be enjoyed by much more than just two players (my group regularly plays with six).

To make it easier to jump in with friends, most sets get preconstructed Commander Decks built around a specific theme or playstyle. Each includes 100 cards, so you can open the box and start playing straight away.

Here are the offerings for the Final Fantasy set, although they appear to be selling quickly, so be sure to check both Amazon and HMV to see what’s in stock and available to buy.

  • Revival Trance (Final Fantasy 6)
  • Limit Break (Final Fantasy 7)
  • Counter Blitz (Final Fantasy 10)
  • Scions and Spellcraft (Final Fantasy 14)

Those looking for single card purchases for the Final Fantasy set should also consider checking out both TCGPlayer, and Magic Madhouse for the latest prices.
