Embracer Group lays off 97 Eidos Montreal employees and cancels new Deus Ex game in development

Embracer Group lays off 97 Eidos Montreal employees and cancels a new game in the Deus Ex series in development. According to a Bloomberg report by Jason Schreier, citing “people familiar with the moves,” the canceled Deus Ex game was in development for the past two years and was scheduled to go into production later in 2024. Although Eidos Montreal did not address publicly the Deus Ex game, did mention the layoffs in a statement posted on Twitter.

“The challenges of our industry and the comprehensive restructuring announced by Embracer have finally impacted our studio,” the statement said. “The difficult decision has been made to lay off 97 people from the development, administration and support services teams.” The statement continues to express pride in the achievements of Eidos teams over the past 17 years, creating award-winning and unique experiences.

The canceled Deus Ex game represents a significant setback for fans of the series, while news of the layoffs underlines the current challenges facing the video game development industry. Eidos Montreal claims to be working to support all affected staff during this transition, highlighting the talented and experienced workforce now seeking new opportunities in the labor market.

Despite these difficult times, the statement concludes by reaffirming Eidos Montreal’s continued commitment to the well-being of its team and creating exceptional games for players to enjoy in the near future.
