Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel titled “Super Mario World”

Art for Super Mario Bros Movie from Nintendo

After the huge box office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo and Illumination were quick to announce that a sequel was in development. Set to hit theaters on 3rd April 2026, not much else has been known about the project, except that Yoshi would be playing an important role in the sequel, as hinted at by the infamous post-credit scene of the first CG-animated film.

In a press release from NBCUniversal that goes over their future slate of projects, the title of The Super Mario Bros. sequel was seemingly revealed, with “Super Mario World” listed alongside other upcoming blockbusters. Yoshi’s first in-game appearance was Super Mario World (1990) on the SNES, so it makes perfect sense for the sequel, which will heavily feature the fan-favourite character, to use the same name.
