Japan: Nintendo confirms 2.2 million people applied for the Switch 2 lottery

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed on X that the Japanese My Nintendo Store lottery to get a Nintendo Switch 2 console has seen 2.2 million people apply. Mr. Furukawa says this is “far more” than the company had anticipated meaning that a significant number of customers will not be able to win.

“On 2 April, we announced the details of the Nintendo Switch 2 and launched the lottery on the My Nintendo Store, which resulted in a huge number of applicants – approximately 2.2 million in Japan alone. However, this is far more than we had previously anticipated, and the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that My Nintendo Store will be able to deliver on 5 June has been exceeded by a large margin. It is therefore very unfortunate that a significant number of customers will not be able to win when we announce the winners tomorrow, 24 April.

In order to avoid the hassle of re-entering the lottery for those who did not win in the first lottery sale, the My Nintendo Store will automatically carry over those who did not win in the first lottery sale to the second lottery sale. However, we will not be able to respond to all the applications received, even if we include the quantity from the second lottery sale. We sincerely apologise for not being able to meet your expectations despite our advance preparations.

We are currently taking steps to meet this demand, including further strengthening our production system. As for product shipments, from tomorrow, 24 April onwards, game shops and online shops nationwide will sequentially begin accepting reservations or lottery sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 console (for details, please check the information provided by each retailer). The My Nintendo Store will also continue to sell the console after the launch date (details will be provided at a later date). With the cooperation of our retailers, we will continue to ship the Nintendo Switch 2 and make every effort to deliver as many Nintendo Switch 2 units as possible to everyone.

We are planning to produce and ship a considerable number of Nintendo Switch 2 in the future. We are very sorry that it will take us some time to meet your expectations.”
