When the Switch 2 was officially revealed by Nintendo in January, they had confirmed that the console would be digitally and physically backwards compatible with Switch 1 games. However they also mentioned that it would come with some exceptions. When the Switch 2 Direct happened, Nintendo elaborated more on this by posting a list of Switch 1 games and the level of compatibility that they had with the Switch 2.
The list isn’t final, as Nintendo is still making adjustments as they continue to test games and try to improve compatibility. For example, Nintendo updated a couple of games on the compatibility list. Fortnite was confirmed to be getting a Switch 2 version, so there is no longer a need to make the Switch 1 version compatible. Meanwhile, Fitness Boxing was confirmed to be getting updated so problems on the Switch 2 can be fixed. A social media post relaying the news can be seen down below.

Nintendo has updated the Switch 1 software compatibility list. There were no major changes.
• Fortnite will receive a Switch 2 version, making compatibility with the Switch 1 version unnecessary.
• Fitness Boxing will be updated to fix problems on Switch 2. https://t.co/Jq8FnSbaIj— OatmealDome (@OatmealDome) April 16, 2025
