Compile Heart and Sting reveal new details and characters for Touhou Spell Carnival

Compile Heart and Sting have released new footage, information and screenshots for Touhou Spell Carnival, including the introduction of the characters Yukari Yakumo, Remilia Scarlet, and Sakuya Izayoi. Here are the details:

■ A Bullet Hell style RPG strategy game

Touhou Spell Carnival takes place during a magic card competition called “Futousai,” which suddenly takes place in Gensokyo. In this game, players can enjoy deeply strategic real-time battles where the goal is to overcome stages filled with traps and ever-changing bursts of bullets. The battles use an RPG strategy system, where stages are divided into tiles and you can spend points accumulated over time to perform various actions while intense bullet hell-style battles take place.

■ Familiar Touhou Project elements adapted to the game

Touhou Spell Carnival incorporates familiar elements that maintain the atmosphere of the Touhou Project, adjusted specifically for this type of game. This includes the “Bomb” function, which eliminates enemy bullet bursts and deals damage, and “Graze,” which allows you to move while avoiding enemy bullet bursts. By dodging enemy bullets with Graze, you can build up a bar that, once reached a certain amount, can be used to activate your “Master Spell Card”—a burst of bullets unique to that character that also deals a large amount of damage. Use Bombs, Grazes and Master Spell Cards effectively to overcome the Futousai competition.

■ Release date and platforms

As recently announced, Touhou Spell Carnival will launch for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Switch on April 18, 2024 in Japan.
