Nintendo announces development continuity for Switch beyond the traditional platform cycle

In the presentation of financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending in March 2024, the president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, revealed exciting plans for the future of the Nintendo Switch console. He stated that the company will continue to release new titles and content for the console “without being limited by the traditional concept of the platform lifecycle.”

With Nintendo Switch about to enter its eighth year in March 2024, Furukawa stated: “We will continue to release new titles and content for Nintendo Switch without being tied to the traditional concept of the platform’s lifecycle.” This statement suggests that Nintendo will not follow the convention of releasing a new console to replace the current one, maintaining the focus on improving and expanding the gaming experience on the current platform.

Furukawa expressed his hope that many consumers will continue to enjoy Nintendo Switch and that the company maintains its commercial momentum. In addition, he revealed that Nintendo Switch Online has exceeded 38 million members as of September 30, 2023. Regarding this service, Nintendo plans to “continue to offer new ways for users to enjoy Nintendo Switch in the long term, expanding the content available through Nintendo Switch Online.”

Another highlight was the impressive reach of Nintendo Account, which has more than 330 million registered users, even in regions where the Switch is not sold directly. This is partly attributed to the presence of mobile applications that have expanded Nintendo Account access to a wider audience.

With this news, Nintendo demonstrates its continued commitment to innovation and expansion, promising an exciting journey for Nintendo Switch owners and those who enjoy its online services.
