The anti-shogunate forces, united in their mission to restore imperial authority; the pro-shogunate forces, defenders of centralized government; and Western forces, catalysts for Japan’s opening to foreign trade and change.
Sabaku: Pro-Shogunate Forces Loyal hearts, firm resolve. The pro-shogunate forces of the Bakumatsu era are Tokugawa supporters, seeking to maintain their centralized government and defend the shogunate against external pressures and internal threats to maintain the existing political order.
- Naosuke Ii: Rise of the Ronin boss Chief minister of the shogunate and lord of the Hikone clan. Working with the Western powers, he opens Japan’s ports to foreign trade.
