3D Mario producer says they wanted Donkey Kong Bananza to be different from what’s come before

Many people noted the similarities between Donkey Kong Bananza and Super Mario Odyssey when the project was first revealed, leading to much speculation online that Donkey Kong’s latest 3D platformer was being produced by the team behind the acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey. Speaking to Famitsu, 3D Mario team producer Kenta Motokura explained to the news site that they wanted Donkey Kong Bananza to be different, not only from Super Mario Odyssey but from previous 3D Donkey Kong games. He’s immensely proud that the team managed to achieve this with Bananza.

“The entire team was able to aim for something new and different from previous ‘3D Mario’ and ‘Donkey Kong’ games, and we can say that we have actually achieved that goal. Now, I hope that the customers enjoy it.”
