Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes to separate on January 1, 2024

Paradox Interactive and Seattle-based developer Harebrained Schemes have announced that they will be parting ways on January 1, 2024. This decision means that Harebrained Schemes will become an independent studio and will no longer be a subsidiary of Paradox Interactive.

This separation is the result of a mutual agreement, based on the strategic and creative priorities of both parties. Paradox Interactive will retain ownership of the recently released The Lamplighters League and other games developed by Harebrained Schemes.

New strategic directions for Paradox Interactive

Paradox Interactive COO Charlotta Nilsson highlighted that Paradox has focused its strategy on its core niches within strategy and management games with infinite qualities. Nilsson stated: “We have been discussing with Harebrained Schemes leadership what would happen after the release of The Lamplighters League, but a new project or sequel in the same genre was not in line with our portfolio plans. Therefore, we believe that separation is the best way forward. “We are very pleased that this talented and gifted studio has the opportunity to continue and we cannot wait to see what they do next.”

Harebrained Schemes focuses on an independent future

Brian Poel, Studio Operations Manager at Harebrained Schemes, added: “Harebrained Schemes will support The Lamplighters League until the end of the year as we seek funding and partnerships for an independent future in 2024. Our studio mission remains the same: create games that challenge your mind and touch your heart.”

This separation between Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes marks a new chapter in the video game industry and raises the question of what innovative projects will emerge from both companies in the future.
